Maryland Polar Bear Plunge: Dive in for a Great Cause

Jumping into the frigid waters of the Chesapeake Bay in the middle of winter might sound a little crazy, but that’s exactly what several thousand locals are planning to do from January 23-25 at the Maryland Polar Bear Plunge. Why? Well, it’s partly the thrill of doing something so extreme, but more importantly, it’s about raising money to help Special Olympics Maryland carry out its important mission. This year plunge organizers have set a fundraising goal of $3 million, and plungers are well on their way to meeting that mark (check the website for an up-to-the-minute fundraising tally).

Want to take the plunge? Head to the website and register for the event to begin raising money. Want to help out without risking frosty fingers and toes? You can make a pledge directly on the website—and then be sure to head to the beach with a mug of hot chocolate while you cheer on the plungers.
